This is for the first time that an Indian movie is making impact in this manner. The much hyped Bollywood movie "Jodhaa Akbar" is releasing in a record 115 theatres in the United States of America, although there has been a call for boycott against the film by a number of Indian American groups. It has come to the knowledge that by now these groups have approached the Government of India to impose a ban on the film.
The film "Jodhaa Akbar" portraying the legendary love between the Mughal Emperor Akbar and his wife Jodhaabai has been directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, of Oscar nominated "Lagaan" fame. But by now the film and the entire crew has come under fire from some groups in India. In the meantime a group in Rajasthan, named the Rajput Karni Sena, has already claimed that Jodhaabai was not Akbar's wife but that of his son Jehangir. In the same style, picking up information from the earlier saga of protests the protesting groups in the US, along with NRI groups in other countries, have come to the streets and said in a recent press release that the film's concocted story is an odious, false, unjust and irreverent portrayal of a Hindu Rajput princess and a Muslim Mughal ruler".
To their discretion the whole story of the film is nothing except the finest specimen of a humongous distortion of history. They have also stated that the film starring Hrithik Roshan as Akbar and Aishwarya Rai as Jodhaa, is "extremely insensitive and it hurts the sentiments of millions of people who love the culture, history and traditions of India". The protesting groups in the US include Global Institute for Truth & Awareness, Independent NRI Forum, Indian American Intellectuals Forum, Rajput Association of North America and Save Temples, USA.
However, meanwhile Gowariker, who is said to have read "Akbarnama" and consulted historian Irfan Habib before starting the project of "Jodhaa Akbar", has defended his creation.
